Visitors 18 years of age and older need a non-resident angling licence to fish in Ontario. There are all-year and seven-day licences, as well as "conservation" licences, which permit keeping fewer or no fish. Resident anglers between 18 and 64 need an Outdoors Card and a valid angling licence. Licences are available at more than 2,000 locations, such as tourist camps, tackle stores, and bait shops. Non-residents can also purchase licences by calling 1-800-667-1940.
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters maintains a Big Fish Registry. For details on how to enter a fish in it, phone 1- 705-748-6324, e-mail ofah@oncomdis.on.ca, or visit www.ofah.org.
The Ontario record muskie weighed 65 pounds and measured 58 inches in length and 30.5 inches in girth. Toronto's Ken O'Brien caught the brute on October 16, 1988, in Georgian Bay's Blackstone Harbour, Moon River Basin. To recognize anglers who release muskie, Muskies Canada has a Public Release Programme. Releasing a muskie that's over the waterbody's size limit for keeping a fish earns an angler a Certificate of Appreciation and a Public Release Pin for their hat or jacket. To participate, send details of when and where the fish was caught and its size to:
